(warning, long story with happy ending)
ok, last night, there was a happy ending to the stolen bike story. so, last saturday at the Westside Invite, a certain postal worker friend of mine and i were drinking beer outside of a party. we see a tweaker-looking guy (you know, 40-ish, scruffy, oversized black leather jacket, mustache, cigarette dangling) roll up on an $800 road bike. he slows down and kind of cruises by all these nice bikes outside, giving them the once over for anything unlocked. my friend says "hey, that guys a bike thief, i've caught him stealing bikes in front of my old job, i hate that motherfucker." oh really, i say, then in my loudest voice (which is very loud, for those who know me), i start calling out "BIKE THIEF, HEY EVERYONE, LOOK AT THE BIKE THIEF". the guy stops, and rolls up to me saying "what the fuck are you talking about?" i get up to confront him, and my other friend PJ, another ZooBomber, gets behind his bike, preventing him from going anywhere. ii ask the guy where he got that VERY expensive road bike from. he says his friend gave it to him. i say, "wow, you must really be into biking to have a friend buy you an $800 road bike. since your friend payed so much for this bike, i bet you know everything about it, huh? like, what are those shifters in the front of the bike called? (they were Tiagra STI shifters) he says "uhm, front shifters?" nope, they're STI shifters, and if you paid $800 for a racing bike, you'd probably know that. so, whats the brand name of that rear derailleur? "uhm, i don't know, my friend Sara gave it to me." seems to me if you or your friend bought such an expensive gift, you'd know more about the bike, not to mention its waaay to small for you (48cm frame with 650cc wheels). so, i'm going to have to believe my friend here when he calls you a bike thief, and i'm guessing you stole that bike. he starts to protest, and PJ yells at him to get off the bike. PJ yells again, and the dude does. i tell him if he brings his friend over to identify it, no problem. otherwise, we're calling the police to run the serial numbers on this bike. the guy starts to protest, and PJ really gets up in his face, and the guy starts to take off, with PJ shouting and chasing after him. we call the cops and run the serial numbers, but it turns up that it wasn't reported. but it is still clearly stolen. we take a moment to discuss what to do with this bike, when suddenly, we notice the bike is no longer there. we call out to see who has the bike, and a lady steps forward. she says she locked it to her bike, and she's going to bring it to Seattle where she works at Mobius Bike Shop. i say 'uhmm...i think this bike should stay in portland until we find its rightful owner.' she says she's all about bikes, and helping people out, and she has a friend that needs a bike. i say, no, really, this bike needs to stay in portland. she says she's not going anywhere, she'll be here tommorow also, and she's insisting that she should be the one taking responsiblilty for the bike, even though she had nothing to do with regaining it, dealing with the cops, and she wants to bring it out of state to most likely resell it in her shop for a nice chunk of change. the lady keeps insisting she should be the one taking responsiblity for it, and promises she'll be here the next day, etc. smelling another fishy situation, i finally state that, no, this is a portlanders bike, and its staying in portland. she shrugs and tells me how she just wants to make sure the bike goes to the right person, blah blah (i'm guessing the "right person" lives in Seattle and would give her a few hundred for the bike). anyway, PJ and i decide on storing it at my house until we find the owner, and the next day, i post to craigslist lost and found, then check out bikeportland. i see a posting for what sounds like the bike, i call the person, and sure enough, it's her bike. she came by to get it last night and was very very happy. me too. i'm just happy i could re-unite a stolen bike with its rightful owner, and for once, get the drop on a fucking bike thief. a few lessons to be learned from this incident. if you see someone who doesn't look like they should be on the bike they are, pay attention, notice the bikes style, where they are going, then check the stolen bike list. or just get ballsy and confront them then and there. lesson two, jsut because someone works in a bike shop, doesn't mean they are down with the cause. there are definitely some opportunists out there (especially ones that work at Mobius in Seattle). but this happy ending is why i came back to portland instead of staying in france. i missed our huge community of dedicated people who give a shit about each other and our world. it's good to be back.

btw, I have delt with mobius in seattle. she always seemed a straight shooter. that said, im glad you guys made that decision, when i heard about what went down i was worried you had freaked someone out into abondoning their ride.

also odd, was that lady who went though my bag while it was sitting by the keg. i watched for for about 3 min before she bothered to look up. she bolted pretty quick after that.

Solid Gold, I think it may be a good idea to sober up before you start shooting your mouth off about a bike shop or a person. I have known Nikki for years and your description of the events concerning her defy reality. I'll break it down for you.

Nikki owns a bike shop in Seattle which specializes in vintage and high end lugged steel bikes. Your assumption that she was attempting to steal the bike from you to sell in Seattle is both foolish and outragous.

Nikki is a well known and well liked member of Seattle's messenger and urban cycling community. She has always been there to help riders, whether or not they had the financial means to compensate her.

Nikki is also a kind and genuine person. She is not a bike thief. She does not sell stolen property. She does not talk shit about folks on her forum.

I think you should talk to Rev. Phil about members of my community before you start shooting your mouth off about them. I can only assume you were as loaded as the rest of us that weekend and the alcohol severely clouded your memory and your judgement.

Sure there are opportunists out there, but why would anyone attempt to steal a bike from in front of a group of people who were ready to lynch a bike thief?

I have always had a good relationship with the ZooBombers, especially Phil (thanks for your post, not really support, but you don't know Nikki that well), but I have to say, your rediculous tirade Solid Gold, has given me pause.

This may have certainly been the case Skid. Let's face it, those of us who are at an event and relatively sober may believe we are more able to manage this type of situation than some loaded folks, (I don't know if being a ZooBomber is a factor, but I think my being a Cutter has put me on the loaded end of this debate.) I can accept the tension in the situation, emotions run high when folks like us catch a bike thief. I can see the confusion created by having someone unknown (seemingly)putting themself in charge of the situation, but the accusations made are very serious and damaging to a person's reputation and the reputation of their business. All of this as the case, I talked to Nikki and she told me there was an exchange of emails or whatever communication between her and SG, that an understanding has been reached, and the situation has been defused. This is good, communication is good, standing together as a community is good, beer is really flippin' good.

im relieved to hear Nikki and SG worked it out, for sure i was a little stunned when i read the report. It does sound strange, but I could see a bike shop owner feeling more than just a little pride when it comes to stolen bikes. I wonder how many people are going to bike shops today asking if anyone has seen their stolen baby? As a storekeep that's got to be draining to hear all the time.

btw Case, you forgot to mention Nikki's skill at wrapping handlebars. I am coming up on a year since she did mine. The longest any wraps have lasted in my time with Duff Numba Five.

i stand by my actions. sorry, i didn't know this nikki person at all, and suddenly this stranger who lives out of state wanted to take the stolen bike up there, although she didn't participate in the getting it back, it just seemed awfully suspicious to me at the time. but yes, i've talked with nikki and we've cleared it up.

if i was really just a hothead, or i had it out for her, i would've mentioned our interaction in the WW article, but i didn't, because unless i was certain of her intentions, i wasn't going to ruin her name. if you weren't there during the entire interaction Red Case Diablo, you really don't know shit. i'm sure nikki is your friend, and i'm sure she's cool and trustworthy, but at the time, our interaction left me awfully suspicious. if you are going to tell me that you're going to turn over a freshly recovered bike to an out of town stranger to let them take it to an out of state bike shop, you're either A. A sucker, or B. Stupid. i'm pretty sure anyone reading this would've reacted the same.

Two sides to every story, whatever. I don't dispute my not being there. I believe I may have felt the same as you in that situation. I also know that Nikki is not a thief, and that was the point of my post. You made an overt accusation about a member of my community stealing bikes from PDX to sell in Seattle. You did not talk to Nikki before making this accusation, you simply went on what you remembered whilst drunk on booze and adrenaline. I cannot let that accusation go without a reply, so there you go. Also, my level of stupidity or the range of my suckerness is up for debate, though I am a pretty good judge of character.

I think rule one here is, never trust a sale man/women. I don't care how straight they seem, they'll all screw someone if it looks easy enough. Dirty drunk zoobomber with no easy way to seattle, thats an easy person to fuck, and SG knows it. He did the right thing by insisting doing it his way.

I still say the entire reason we have theft is becuase we don't kill theives anymore, which we should. I followed two scumy looking fucks I saw walk into the university parking lot on the ride home last night. They certainly wern't university students, and it was 1:30am on a wednessday, they were car prowlers, looking for a window to smash. I flagged a cop down and it was taken care of, course he couldn't do much snice they hadn't smashed a window yet.

Theft is theft. Do you think would be cool if MY car was broken into? Sorry, there are not enough hours in the day to bike or bus to Lake Oswego for work AND be home in time for the kids to get home from school.

Also, for the 2000th time BEING ANTI-CAR WILL NEVER HELP YOU GET PEOPLE OUT OF CARS AND ONTO BIKES. That is the goal to get more people onto bikes and out of their cars, right?
